5 Bourbons Under $40 Bartenders Actually Keep at Home

Willett Pot Still Reserve Straight Bourbon Whiskey bottle

Let’s be honest—bourbon prices have gotten a little wild lately. You can easily drop serious cash on a bottle that’s… just okay.

But the good news? You don’t need to spend big to drink well.

A bunch of bartenders were asked what they actually keep around at home, and surprise: it’s not the fancy, overpriced stuff. It’s solid, affordable bottles that taste great and get the job done.

Here are a few of their go-to picks.

Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond

This one comes up again and again—and for good reason. It’s cheap (like, really cheap), but still tastes like legit bourbon.

You get those classic flavors—caramel, vanilla, a little oak—and it’s strong enough (100 proof) to work just as well in cocktails as it does on its own. Basically, it’s the definition of a “bang for your buck” bottle.

Jim Beam Black (7-Year)

People tend to overlook this one, but bartenders love it. It’s aged longer than the standard Jim Beam, which gives it a bit more depth.

Think richer caramel, smoother vanilla, and a more rounded feel overall. It’s still easy to drink, but it’s got enough character to keep things interesting.

Old Grand-Dad Bonded

Not flashy, not trendy—but super reliable. This is the kind of bourbon you grab when you want something that just works.

It’s got a little more spice thanks to the rye, and the 100 proof means it holds up really well in cocktails. Solid choice if you like a bit of kick. And as a side note....it’s from Cincinnati!

New Riff Bottled-in-Bond

Winner of the 2026 Whiskies Awards: Bourbon World’s Best

A newer name compared to the classics, but definitely earning its spot. Bartenders like it because it feels a little more “craft” without getting expensive.

It’s balanced, flavorful, and easy to recommend whether you’re sipping or mixing.

Old Forester (various expressions)

Old Forester keeps popping up in bartender recs for a reason—it’s dependable.

It’s got that familiar bourbon profile (sweet, a little spicy, a little oaky) and works in pretty much any situation. Great for cocktails, easy for sipping, and not hard to find.

Conclusion

The overall vibe from bartenders is pretty consistent:

  • They’re not chasing hype bottles

  • They don’t care about collector status

  • They want something affordable, tasty, and versatile

A lot of these bourbons are what you’d call “everyday” bottles—the kind you can pour without overthinking it.
