Welcome to this introductory guide to bourbon tasting. This article presents key information designed to support your initial exploration of bourbon. As you embark on this journey, it is advisable to sample a range of bourbons that vary in age and price to develop a comprehensive understanding of their characteristics.

However, the best way to learn about and grow your bourbon knowledge is to taste thoughtfully and intentionally, taking your time to evaluate the aromas, flavors and experience of each whiskey. And don’t listen to the Bourbon Snobs!  If you need to add water or a mixer until your palate is more used to bourbon...go for it.

Below are a few things to keep in mind on your bourbon journey...

A Few Pointers for Bourbon Newbies

  • Sip slowly. Bourbon drinkers often take their time and enjoy small sips of bourbon to fully appreciate its flavor.

  • It’s a tasting of bourbon, not a shot. We’re here to savor, not drink it all at once and definitely not to get buzzed!

  • For individuals experienced with wine tastings and possessing a refined palate, it is advisable to begin with a bourbon of lower proof rather than immediately sampling cask strength options, as the palate may require acclimation to higher alcohol content.

  • As we mentioned above, don’t hesitate to have water to dilute the bourbon if you need to. Many master tasters prefer to taste at 30% ABV or lower.

  • Bourbon tasting is a sensory experience. Aromas are highly evocative of memories, and following the associations to a memory will help you determine what it reminds you of. For example, a tobacco note might remind you of your grandfather smoking a pipe.

  • To clear a lingering smell, sniff your skin or use coffee beans to reset your senses.

The Right Glassware Matters

Choosing the right glass, like the tulip-shaped Glencairn, helps concentrate aromas. Using the same type of glass consistently is important for developing your nose and palate.

Setting the Scene

Set up a whiskey space in a quiet, neutral room with gentle lighting and comfortable temperature. Have water and a bourbon flavor wheel ready to improve tasting. You can also have snacks that pair well with each bourbon such as chocolate.

Don’t Forget About the Four Pillars of Bourbon Evaluation

  1. Aroma: It’s all about the nose. Swirl, sniff, and let the aromas tell their story.

  2. Appearance: Observe the color and texture. It’s like deciphering the whiskey’s history.

  3. Flavor: Take your time here. Let each sip dance on your tongue and reveal its secrets.

  4. Finish: Savor the lingering flavors and impressions. How does it feel from the tip of your tongue to the back of your throat?

Taste Like a Pro

Below are some common terms to learn when starting your bourbon tasting adventure!

  • Nosing: Put the glass to your nose and slowly breathe in. This sets the stage for the flavors.

  • Sipping: Start small and let each sip reveal its complexity. This is not the time to “take a shot”. Take your time.

  • Describing: Use detailed and precise language to create a vivid image in your mind. Is it spicy like cinnamon or sweet like caramel? What does it feel like in your mouth? Does it change as it travels to the front of your tongue to the back of your throat?

Observations in Bourbon Tasting

Aromas and flavors can be identified by using both the nose and palate. Aging and barrels contribute to the characteristics of bourbon. Flavors and aromas may be described from general categories to more specific notes, such as progressing from citrus to orange to dried peel, or from sweet to caramel to crème brûlée.
