From First Sip to Favorite Bottle: Getting Into Bourbon Made Easy

Getting into bourbon doesn’t have to be intimidating at all. The best beginner bourbons are the ones that go down easy, taste great without a ton of effort, and won’t break the bank. You’re mostly looking for something smooth and approachable—something you can sip without feeling like your throat is on fire after every taste.

A great place to start is with a wheated bourbon like Maker’s Mark. These tend to be a bit softer and sweeter, which makes them super beginner-friendly. On the other hand, if you’re curious about what “classic bourbon” tastes like, something like Woodford Reserve gives you that traditional mix of vanilla, caramel, and oak, without being too harsh or overwhelming.

At the end of the day, the “perfect” starter bourbon really just depends on what kind of flavors you like. Do you lean toward sweet and mellow? Or are you okay with a little spice and bite? There’s no wrong answer—it’s more about exploring and finding what clicks for you.

Sweeter & Smoother (Wheated Bourbons)

If you’re brand new to whiskey—or you just know you like softer, sweeter drinks—wheated bourbons are your best friend. Instead of using rye as the secondary grain, they use wheat, which gives the bourbon a smoother, less spicy finish. Think creamy, mellow, and easy to sip.

  • Maker’s Mark

This is pretty much the go-to starter bourbon for a reason. It’s super approachable, with warm flavors like vanilla and caramel, and it doesn’t hit you with a harsh burn. You can drink it straight, over ice, or mix it into cocktails—it works for everything.

  • Larceny

If you want something a little more budget-friendly, Larceny is a great pick. It’s still sweet and smooth, but with a slightly richer vibe. Definitely an easy sipper that won’t overwhelm your palate.

Classic & Balanced (Traditional Bourbons)

If you’re ready to try something a bit more “standard,” traditional bourbons are where you’ll start to notice that classic whiskey flavor profile. These usually include a mix of corn, rye, and barley, which gives them a little more spice and complexity—but still very enjoyable for beginners.

  • Woodford Reserve

This one feels a bit more refined but is still super accessible. You’ll pick up notes like honey, toasted oak, and baking spices, but nothing is too strong or aggressive. It’s a really well-balanced introduction to bourbon.

  • Buffalo Trace

One of the most popular entry-level bourbons out there. It’s got a nice mix of brown sugar sweetness, a hint of dark fruit, and just enough oak to keep things interesting. Easy to like and even easier to recommend.

  • Four Roses Bourbon

If you want something lighter, this is a great option. It’s slightly floral and fruity, and at a lower proof, it’s less intense than a lot of other bourbons. Perfect if you’re worried about that strong alcohol kick.

How to Actually Drink It (No Pressure Here)

A lot of people get hung up on “the right way” to drink bourbon, but honestly, there isn’t one. It’s all about finding what you enjoy.

  • Start neat, then adjust

Take a small sip straight just to see what it tastes like on its own. If it feels too strong, that’s totally normal—just tweak it a bit.

  • Add a splash of water

A few drops of water can make a big difference. It lowers the alcohol intensity and can actually bring out more of the flavor and aroma.

  • Try it on ice

A single large ice cube is perfect. It chills the bourbon and slowly dilutes it, making each sip a little smoother over time.

  • Go the cocktail route

If sipping isn’t your thing yet, no worries at all. Start with something like an Old Fashioned, or just mix your bourbon with ginger ale or cola. It’s still a great way to get familiar with the flavor.

Conclusion

The biggest thing to remember is this: there’s no “wrong” way to start. Bourbon is one of those things you kind of learn by trying different bottles and seeing what you like. Take your time, experiment a little, and don’t stress about doing it perfectly—you’ll figure out your favorites before you know it.

Cheers!
