Louisville Selected as Host City for the 2028 USA Gymnastics Olympic Trials

USA Gymnastics and the Louisville Sports Commission announced that Louisville has been awarded the governing body’s 2028 U.S. Olympic team trials. The 15 days of events at the KFC Yum Center and the Kentucky International Convention Center, from June 5-19, 2028, will include four competitions and the National Congress & Trade Show.

At the conclusion of the trials, the women’s and men’s national team athletes who will represent the United States weeks later at the Olympic Games in L.A. will be announced live in front of the KFC Yum Center audience and on NBC Sports.

The event is expected to provide a significant economic boost to the city, said Greg Fante, president and CEO of the sports commission, noting that more than 6,500 athletes and coaches will participate.

USAG’s bid package documents estimate that the organization, their partners and the event’s participants require nearly 12,000 room nights. The bid requires the host hotels to be within walking distance of the competition venues. Over the past few months, two downtown hotel development projects have been announced that will add 1,400 rooms to the city’s room inventory over the next two years.

For three straight years, sports has made up more than 30% of the rooms lured to town by Louisville Tourism, the city’s destination marketing organization, nearly double what it was a decade ago.

The 2024 trials held at Target Center in Minneapolis drew more than 200,000 fans, according to a report conducted by University of Minnesota Extension, 77% of whom came from outside the Twin Cities. The 10-day stay generated $5.7M in tax collections.

Downtown Louisville will take on the official moniker “Gymnastics City USA 2028,” and Fourth Street Live, an entertainment district run by Cordish Companies, will serve as a hub for fan activations and live entertainment.

Attendance records could also be set, as KFC Yum Center has one of the largest arena capacities in the country at 22,000 for basketball.

The single-night attendance record for the Indianapolis-based organization’s trials is 20,815, set in St. Louis in 2021 at The Dome at America’s Center.

Louisville has become a frequent destination for major national gymnastics competitions. For the past four years, for example, USA Gymnastics’ season-opening Winter Cup has been held at the KICC.

“We took an event that USA Gymnastics couldn’t find a home for and we invested in it,” Doug Bennett, the executive vice president of Louisville Tourism, the region’s destination marketing organization, told SBJ in January, as the two sides were finalizing the deal. “Now it is a revenue-producing event for us and for them.”
